About Us

The Yorùbá Academy

The Academy, founded in 2007, is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental, multi-disciplinary policy institution set up to shepherd the growth and development of Yorùbá language, arts, culture, and heritage, through collaboration with scholars, artists, politicians, businessmen and experts in Yorùbá language, culture, economics, law, science and technology, and governance. The Yorùbá language is spoken by between 45 and 55 million people worldwide both as first and second language speakers, and has produced a generation of intellectual, creative, and anthropological impact on world civilization. The role of this Academy is to document and shepherd the future of the language, its influence and relevance, and its growth in all the relevant domains in its home environment in Nigeria, around the continent, and across the world. We do this in collaboration with pre-eminent educational institutions locally, nationally, and around the world.

The Academy’s
Art/Culture
Residency
Programme

Our secretariat in Ìbàdàn is equipped with a three-room BQ which we have designed to host artists, writers, scholars, and other visitors willing to do work in a conducive living environment. We designed a Residency Programme to cater to this need. It involves free lodging, feeding, and access to our library and reading rooms while the artist is resident with us. The work they produce will be shared with the Academy’s Research Library for the benefit of our library users and the general public.
